About your host, Jesse Selvagn

Hi, I'm Jesse. I'm a sake and beverage educator living in Saigon. I moved here in 2018 to join the Hong Kong based Sake Central team as GM and Sommelier to open their second branch in Saigon. I'm originally from Washington, DC, where I spent 15 years in F&B in roles ranging from dishwasher to general manager. There I served behind the bar at the Michelin Two Star Pineapple and Pearls, as Maitre D’ and Japanese Whiskey/Sake Sommelier at Japanese-French fusion restaurant Crane and Turtle, and opening bartender at Daikaya Izakaya (named in GQ's 25 Best New Restaurants of 2014). During this time, I also founded pop-up Bar Otsukare to curate educational sake, shochu and Japanese whisky tastings. I'm a professionally certified Sake Sommelier, Shochu Advisor, and Cicerone, passed WSET II with Distinction, and served as a judge in the first annual Concours Mondial Sake Competition in Mie prefecture in 2018.

What we will do

Learn by tasting! By the end of our time together, you'll order Sake with confidence and enjoy it with all of your favorite foods.

Starting with a drink of course, we'll have a quick primer on how to taste Sake like a professional.

Then we'll taste 4 pairs of Sakes, using each to demonstrate unique aspects like rice polishing, temperature, regional styles, and labels.

Throughout the tasting, we'll discuss Sake's long history and deep cultural ties to Japan.

What we will provide

I will provide 10 different Sakes and all the info you need to continue your Sake journey with friends and/or your favorite foods. You'll also get printed materials like maps, tasting sheets and key sake vocab.

Who can do this

Learning by tasting is the motto of this event! If you want to learn more about Japanese drinking culture, while having a few drinks yourself, this is the right activity for you.

Why you should do this

Become the new cultural expert of traditional Japanese Sake in your circle of friends.

Where we will do this

Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

I recommend a group size of minimum 6 and maximum of 10 people. Larger parties can be accommodated with advanced planning.
